ARE YOU WHAT YOU EAT / DRINK?
Please read this article with this information in mind, 2004 study: “In USA, approximately 300,000 deaths per year may be attributable to obesity.”
The estimated annual health care costs of obesity (2005)-related illness are a staggering $190.2 billion or nearly 21% of annual medical spending in the United States.
Ever remember these words?: “You are what you eat“. (Nowadays we may as well add “Drink” too).
In the land of the free, freedom is getting limited to just speech, not freedom to know what your food is or what it is made of, it is becoming apparent that you can eat what ever you choose, but don’t ask what is in it, because you don’t have a right to that information (may be patented) or nobody knows it, not even the seller or the chef.
The word choice is not so straight forward, just because you feel like burning on hot summer day and choose to quench your thirst with a sports drink – should not mean you want to gulp down a fire retardant. Choice involves access to all the information of different types needed to enable one to make a choice and the ability to know the difference.
“Who determines Safety of New Food ingredients?” If you think it is “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration” (FDA), think again.
‘The New York Times’ – “About 10,000 chemicals are allowed to be added to foods, about 3,000 of which have never been reviewed for safety by the F.D.A., according to Pew’s research. Of those, about 1,000 never come before the F.D.A. unless someone has a problem with them; they are declared safe by a company and its handpicked advisers.”
Since the food producer is not mandated by law in California or any other state to provide you with food information – such as whether or not a product is a GMO, or list all the additive chemicals in your food, therefore differentiating what is at hand is not possible, hence – to some extent, one is denied choice in deciding on what to eat or drink. As the saying goes “The devil is in the detail” – For example: In US, sports drinks advertised as health contain BVO. However, after the BVO study in 1969, Europe, Japan and India banned it from beverages.
North America and Latin America did the same, but in 1970, they permitted its use again, but this time it was done on interim basis pending further studies. Now – 42 years later, BVO is still in the same limbo. Definition of “interim” is up to you to decipher, but it may not necessarily be the same as FDA’s.
For those interested in knowing what they are gulping down to quench their thrust, you may want to look at BVO – Brominated vegetable oil Q & A.
It may be easier to find out additives in liquor and beer than Soft drinks. And about drinking, “Diet Soda May Be the More Dangerous Alcohol Mixer.
-Listening to Aspartame NutraSweet safety debate might make you think twice before consuming it or any product that contains it; it’s your decision.
Dr. Oz invited an investigative reporter from the New York Times (Michael Moss) on to the show to talk about how the industry is producing foods that are causing millions of people to be addicted to foods high in salt, sugar, and fat. The “Big Food Cover Up” has created a food addiction and is keeping us coming back to buy more and more packaged processed foods.
The facts in our face:-
Frustrated New York Law makers have approved Mayor Micheal Bloomberg’s plan to limit the size of sugary soft drinks sold in restaurants, movie theaters, stadiums and arenas to no more than 16 ounces (473 milliliters) a cup, in an effort to fight obesity, while a New York City Judge sides with the business industry instead of health.
After the findings from Oxford University were published online by the British Medical Journal, MPs started calling on the government to introduce similar legislation in UK, as New York’s.
- The research, published in the Obesity Reviews journal, found that Chinese teenagers’ rate of diabetes was four times that of their American peers.
An Excerpt from “Fat Chance” by Robert Lustig M.D. Copyright by Robert Lustig M.D.:-
A Fallacy of Biblical Proportion
Juan, a 100 lb. six-year old Latino boy whose mother is a non-English-speaking farm worker from Salinas,California, comes to my clinic in 2003. He is wider than he is tall. I ask the mother in my broken Spanish, “I don’t care what your kid eats, tell me what he drinks.” No soda, but a gallon of orange juice per day. On calories alone, this amount accounts for 112 lbs/yr of body fat. of course, some of that is burned off, and it might influence total food intake.
I explain to the mother, “La frutta es bueno, el jugos es malo (the fruit is good, the juice is bad). Eat the fruit, don’t drink the juice.” She then asks, “Then why does WIC (Women, Infants, and Children; a government entitlement program for the poor run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture) give it to us?”
One kid, one mother, one question, my life was changed, and the need for this book was born.
Revealing the Soft Drink Corporation Conspiracy:
“Sugar: The Bitter Truth” by Dr. Robert Lustig**** – He talks about Coca Cola Conspiracy (start at 12:56 min. in the video) Dr. Lustig explains it this way:
Three chemicals intentionally added to Soda:
1. Caffeine; 2. Salt; 3. High fructose corn syrup.
1-Caffeine is a diuretic (makes one urinate more therefore able to drink more) and also addictive – you get hooked.
2-Salt makes one thirsty, therefore more drink to quench the thirst.
3- High fructose corn syrup is to hide the taste of salt.
(At 20:20 min. he states that High fructose corn syrup is POISON and not calories , then he goes on to prove it. And he says that it all started with Politics – with Richard Nixon: at 23:28 min. Starting at 29:16min., he talks about the 3rd, political storm*; then what was done wrong in 1982? check it out staring at 38:56min.
High fructose corn syrup is not Glucose – starts at 43:55min. is very informative** . Why Sports Drinks such as Gatorade are bad, especially for the kids starts at: 1:02:19 ***; And at 1:06:59 African Americans process High fructose corn syrup differently from Caucasians)
(Disclosure; “I requested Dr. Lustig’s permission and this was his relply: “Mr. Nzabandora, I don’t have any problem with your using my comments or quotes”.)
Note: Because Caffeine is addictive and a stimulant to the central nervous system, if you stop taking it abruptly, you may get withdrawal symptoms which include:
Importance Increases in fructose consumption have paralleled the increasing prevalence of obesity, and high-fructose diets are thought to promote weight gain and insulin resistance. Fructose ingestion produces smaller increases in circulating satiety hormones compared with glucose ingestion, and central administration of fructose provokes feeding in rodents, whereas centrally administered glucose promotes satiety.
- Experts say a small study adds evidence that fructose may play a role in overeating.
- All sugars are not equal — even though they contain the same amount of calories — because they are metabolized differently in the body.
- The desire to eat continues unlike after imbibing glucose drinks
- Brain does not register full feeling after a fructose beverage is consumed
– Is fructose bad for you?
by Dr. Anthony Komaroff, Harvard Medical School.
DEAR DOCTOR K:
- I keep hearing about how bad fructose and high-fructose corn syrup are for my health. But is fructose really worse than other types of sugar?
- The short answer is yes. I’m not an expert on sugar metabolism, but I’ll tell you what the experts at Harvard Medical School tell me.
Dr. Mark’s Minute – High Fructose Corn Syrup is POISON Reason #1
U.S. Trends in Total Sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) availability and incident Diabetic End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
-Never judge a book by the cover:
- Such as – 100% Juice, Salad dressings, Breakfast Cereal, Nutrition Bars; etc.
According to FDA, a product may be labeled “Sugar Free” if it doesn’t contain “Sucrose”, regardless of how ever much it contains other sugars such as “Glucose, Fructose, Lactose, Dextrose, Splenda, NutraSweet or High Fructose Corn Syrup etc.”.
Case in point: “SUGAR FREE GUM” has some chemicals listed on one side of the pack as containing “SUCRALOSE” and XYLITOL. However, Sucralose is another disguised name for Splenda. Check out “The Potential Dangers of Sucralose (Splenda)“, Xylitol also found in candies, cakes etc, is very toxic to dogs.
Terms like “fat free or all natural” are often displayed the on a food item, however, they may not be healthy at all.
The historical ratio of omega-6 to omega-3
Throughout 4-5 million years of hominid evolution, diets were abundant in seafood and other sources of omega-3 long chain fatty acids (EPA & DHA), but relatively low in omega-6 seed oils.
Anthropological research suggests that our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed omega-6 and omega-3 fats in a ratio of roughly 1:1. It also indicates that both ancient and modern hunter-gatherers were free of the modern inflammatory diseases, like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, that are the primary causes of death and morbidity today.
At the onset of the industrial revolution (about 140 years ago), there was a marked shift in the ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids in the diet. Consumption of n-6 fats increased at the expense of n-3 fats. This change was due to both the advent of the modern vegetable oil industry and the increased use of cereal grains as feed for domestic livestock (which in turn altered the fatty acid profile of meat that humans consumed).
Food chemical additives or Genes?
These shapes below are not by choice, so the question is this: “Does this have to do with just their genes only (note: this is a new trend) or the type of unlabelled foods and drinks with added chemicals, High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and growth hormones these individuals are consuming as well?”; Center for disease Control says that this is becoming a trend. Remember, “You are what you eat, and DRINK”:
On a brighter note, there is an Island where people are healthy and forget to die:-
More than forty five years ago, Stamatis Moraitis lived in US and was given nine months to live after he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
Since it was very expensive to have a funeral in US, he asked his wife to return to their home – island Ikaria in Greece, to be buried with his parents.
He is now 98 years old, healthy and strong, tending his vineyard and olive grove.
How does he think he recovered from lung cancer?
“It just went away,” he said. “I actually went back to America about 25 years after moving here to see if the doctors could explain it to me.”
“My doctors were all dead.”
On average, they live an astounding 8 to 10 years longer than Americans, are 2.5 times as likely to survive to 90, and are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s. – Washingtonpost.
