The above is a misrepresention of facts.
From distortion of safety trial findings to assertions of retracted paper of Prof. Seralini, it is nothing but spinning the facts of the matter.
Note: On GMO food safety here is the evidence: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/science-pusztai-the-verdict-1071729.html
About Prof. Seralini’s work referenced without the minister mentioning his name, facts are here for all to see:
Customer Protection First, GMO Second. Holding GMO Accountable.
Dear Mr. President, Yoweri Museveni,
Whereas I’m not a spokesman for anyone or any group+, the people I’ve talked to, do appreciate and thank you for declining to sign the GMO Bill which did not put Customer Protection First.
In August, 2003, as you presided over the launch of a biotech lab at the Kawanda Research Institute, you told the audience that George Bush, the US president, had urged you to take on GMOs during his visit. You got applauses from the staff of the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO).
But you warned against abuse of biotechnology, saying the Government was against GMOs becoming a problem. It is the very same message you are now sending out, by declining to sign a GMO bill that potentially creates more problems than it solves. Except this time, NARO’s stuff is not ready to hear that warning.
Of the itemized 11 reasons you gave, one that upsets the pro-GMO agents the most is the one about “Accountability,” item #10, which calls for protecting the consumer and holding GMO developers “Accountable for the damages they cause.” Why are they opposed to that requirement if they believe their technology doesn’t create any problems?
GMO agricultural Failures (Problems):
The list is long.
etc.: What hasn’t been told to the public about what took place and the findings.
GMO WEMA a Hoax?:
Item #2 in the Decline Signing letter, you were wondering and asking whether irrigation of WEMA is a hoax. The evidence is right here Mr. president in the picture, as the saying goes, a picture is worth 1,000 words. Black tubes on the ground are drip irrigation system that drips water at the roots of the plant.
The same with the second photo in the following article. Black tubes on the ground are drip irrigation system which waters at the roots of the plant. Mr. President, this is the real efficient Drip technology they were using in growing WEMA.
Besides, Dr Imelda Kashaija, deputy director general in charge of agricultural technology promotion at NARO revealed that, NARO has genetically engineered crops which cannot be replanted and, every crop season, farmers must buy new seeds. In other words, NARO has been involved in Terminator Technology all along, contrary to the assurance that it would never introduce Monsanto’s patented Terminator Technology into Uganda.
It is unfortunate that the same people criticizing you Mr. President for excising precautionary principle and refusing to sign on to the GMO Bill he believes is not in the best interests of the public, are the same individuals who invited an academic as one of the main speakers at the Continental Science and Tech. conference in Uganda, who had told Monsanto that, “I’m glad to sign on to whatever you like, or write anything you like”.
President of Uganda, Mr. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, we are glad that you are not the type that signs on to whatever is put in front of you, be it NARO Scientists or Monsanto, unless the Customer, Ugandan Citizen, is protected. As more information comes out, the more it makes it imperative to take heed and practice the precautionary principle, per Cartagena Protocol.
Your position, Mr. President, is rightly placed, “Responsibility & Accountability must go hand in hand, to protect the consumer.”
Thank you once again, President, Mr. Yoweri K. Museveni. Wishing you and your family a blessed, prosperous and GMO free New Year.
